What is the Mimic Party game?

Mimic Party is a voice party game developed by FoliesAPP, a French independent studio, and released on Steam for Windows on August 27, 2026 โ€” moved up to the very same day the game crossed 30,000 wishlists. The premise fits in one breath: the whole table hears a reference sound, and when the countdown ends you have to imitate it with your own voice. One take, no second chance. Every take is then played back to the room one player at a time, a local AI awards it a score out of 100, and the wheel spins. Sessions are short and loud โ€” the official site pitches roughly ten minutes and about four rounds per party, and the host can tune the round count in the lobby, although player reviews report a cap of seven rounds and ask for more options. Between one and five players can join, online only, each one needing a microphone and, ideally, headphones.

Every round runs the same six fixed steps: the prompt plays once for the whole table, everyone records at the same time under the same countdown, nobody gets a second attempt, takes are replayed one player at a time while everyone else stays muted, the AI grades, and then the wheel turns. The scoring model is what lifts Mimic Party from a shouting contest into a skill game. The mark out of one hundred combines three dimensions โ€” Melody, compared on relative pitch so your vocal range does not matter; Rhythm; and Attacks, the number of onsets, because one bark does not pass for three. Timbre is deliberately ignored, the entire grade is computed locally on your machine rather than in the cloud, and there is no player voting. Between rounds the wheel hands out bonuses, multipliers and sabotages โ€” Saturation, Echo, Pitch shift, Chopped audio and the infamous Fart swap โ€” and a sabotage you draw is aimed at a victim of your choosing: it hits their next take, docks them extra points, and they only find out who did it when their take plays.

Around that loop sits a content ecosystem. Reference sounds are picked at random across the packs you own: the base game ships with official Animals, Machines and Voices themes, and the built-in sound pack maker publishes community packs to the Steam Workshop in a couple of clicks โ€” everyone at the table must install the chosen packs before the party starts, and the lobby shows who is still downloading. There are fourteen characters, unlocked progressively as you level, one of them exclusive to the official Discord, with an All Characters DLC that unlocks the whole roster in one click. The base game costs $6.99 with a launch discount, a free Playtest hands out keys through the same Discord server, and a bundle with the studio's earlier title Animic is also available. Reception in the launch window has been mixed and busy at once: connection and microphone complaints sit beside a TikTok wave and fifty thousand copies sold inside nine days.

Frequently Asked Questions

See all FAQ
Do I need a microphone to play Mimic Party?

Yes, absolutely required โ€” the official system requirements say a microphone is REQUIRED because the whole game is played with your voice. We also strongly recommend headphones: the game itself advises them, and launch-window reviewers confirm that game audio leaking into an open mic can get picked up and even scored.

Can we play locally on one screen or one PC?

No. Mimic Party is online only and needs a constant connection โ€” there is no local same-screen mode. The store lists 1-5 players, but the solo slot is for practicing alone; the requirements describe it as online multiplayer only (2-5 players). At least one player refunded specifically because there is no couch multiplayer.

My friend cannot join with the room code and it times out. What helps?

This is a known launch-window issue with no official answer yet. The community workaround: in settings, both host and friends switch to the same region outside Europe (the EU servers are the overloaded ones), and the host creates an open party. Some players report it still fails after doing everything right โ€” if that happens, the two-hour Steam refund window is your safety net.

What does the "player is still missing content" error mean?

It is a Steam Workshop sound pack sync failure: everyone at the table must have the same pack, at the same version, installed before the game starts. The lobby shows who is still downloading. Players report that reinstalling the game or clearing the Workshop cache does not help โ€” after a pack author updates their pack, each subscriber has to manually uninstall and reinstall it.

Why did I score 0 even though I imitated the sound perfectly?

The scorer only compares melody (in relative pitch), rhythm and attack count โ€” never how similar you sound โ€” and it runs locally on your machine. That said, "sounded perfect, got 0" is the single most common complaint in launch-window reviews, no fix has been announced, and the per-dimension weights are unpublished. Our honest advice: treat it as a party game, not a competitive ladder.

Can I switch microphones or adjust audio settings inside the game?

No โ€” there are no in-game microphone or headphone settings at all, which even the longest-playing reviewers confirm. The workaround: change your default microphone in the Windows sound settings, then start the game. If your mic is not detected, that Windows-level default is the first thing to check.
